5 New Super Earths Found (NON-Gaming... but cool)

The image “http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/121168/science-news-super-earth-2_qjgenth.jpg?927241” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
Five new super-Earths have been located in solar systems far, far away. What's so super about them you ask? Well, the biggest of them is 30 times huger than our own planet.

These planets were found by the High-Accuracy Radial-Velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS), a device that has found 45 super-Earths since 2004.

The goal of its search is to find a planet similar to our own, hopefully to duplicate the conditions that gave life to Earth. Who knows? Maybe humans can even migrate to it once we find it (fat chance of that happening in the near future since we haven't even managed to send a team to Mars yet).

This is all fruitless speculation anyway, since we haven't yet found any habitable planets for us. The super-Earths found are far too massive, and far too inhospitable. Because of their rapid orbit around their respective suns (one of them has a complete revolution in four days, whereas we take 365), they are believed to be nothing more than balls of hot gas.

The search for a not-Super-Earth continues. Perhaps when we have developed Faster Than Light technology, and we have created a cybernetic race we have affectionately named Cylons, and after said race tries to eradicate our own and we are forced to leave to look for another maybe-mythical Earth, maybe then.

Call of Duty: World at War screenshots are leaked 1 week early

Take a trip down the Pacific theater with us as we take a look at the first screenshots of Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War (PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii). The images, leaked from the German official Xbox magazine and several European sites, weren't supposed to be seen until its official unveiling next week.

The images definitely keep in the theme of the Call of Duty series, especially now that the latest iteration decided to return to its World War II roots. Utilizing the same engine from the previous title, Call of Duty: World at War is definitely shaping up to be another great installment to CoD legacy.

Check in with us again next week as we cover more news regarding the latest game in the Call of Duty series. In the meantime, you can enjoy the rest of the screenshots we have from the game below.

MGS4 = #1

Raiden does the happy dance! - Image 1

While Solid Snake is taking over Japan with epic numbers in tow, the UK is likewise celebrating Konami's latest stealth title. In fact, Metal Gear Solid 4 has actually debuted straight to the top of the UK software charts for the period of June 9 to June 15.

With MGS4 dominating the pack, Lego Indiana Jones is chased by a rolling boulder down to the second spot. In turn, Niko Bellic slips down another rank with GTA4 holding third place.

For a PS3-exclusive to snuff out the multiplatform success of Lego Indy... That's really saying something. What's more is that MGS4's success only counts for three days of the total week of the chart's timespan. MGS4 was released on the 12th - a Thursday - remember? Imagine that, eh?

In terms of PS3 launch week sales, Guns of the Patriots now sits comfortably between Grand Theft Auto 4 and Gran Trusimo 5: Prologue as the UK's second-fastest PS3 title. And if it's a matter of comparing MGS4 to the rest of the Metal Gear saga's UK launch weeks, the latest iteration in the franchise is stuck squarely between MGS2 (with MGS4 down by 24,000 units) and MGS3 (with MGS4 ahead by 14,000 units).

Meanwhile, other mainstays are still around: Mario & Sonic still running up the track, Dr. Kawashima picking at everyone's brain cells, and PES 2008 still kicking to stay alive. Also debuting this week is Civilization Revolution from civ-sim guru Sid Meier.

Here are the top 20 games in the UK for week ending June 15, 2008:
  1. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
  2. Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures
  3. Grand Theft Auto IV
  4. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games
  5. Dr Kawashima's Brain Training
  6. Race Driver: GRiD
  7. Wii Play
  8. Sports Island
  9. Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution
  10. Wii Fit
  11. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
  12. FIFA 08
  13. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
  14. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
  15. Ninja Gaiden II
  16. Mario Kart Wii
  17. Carnival: Funfair Games
  18. UEFA Euro 2008 Austria-Switzerland
  19. Game Party
  20. Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit

PS3 Backward Compatability???

The image “http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/120806/40GB%20PS3_qjpreviewth.jpg?398344” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
The issue of backwards compatibility on the Sony PlayStation 3 has calmed down a bit over the past few months, but just when you thought we've all let go of that, some buzz from Germany brings it back to life.

Near as we can figure from the rough translation of the report from German sire Ingame, they were able to talk to a Sony supplier about the matter. The supplier apparently tipped them off that 40GB PS3s will be backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 games courtesy of a firmware update this October.

According to Ingame, the supplier even joked that he has to get rid of his 60GB PS3 stock before 40GB PS3s get BC. It appears that the older version of the console is in hot demand over in Europe because of their added functionality.

Take this one with a grain of salt, people. There's really no way of debunking or confirming it at the moment. We'll give you more updates soon

PSP Firmware 4.00 Feature LEAKAGE!!!

PSP Firmware 4.00 coming soon: includes Google Search, change video playback speed - Image 1
We don't have a specific date for it yet, but according to Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations, the PSP's official firmware 4.00 update "will be released soon." How soon? We can only hope.

What can we expect from FW 4.00? According to Lempel, the upgrade will have a new Google Internet Search feature, accessible straight from the XMB. It uses Google's algorithms so it will return the exact same results as www.google.com.

The feature returns a search history recall of 20 items. Of course, you'll need to be connected to the Internet via a wireless access point or Wi-Fi hotspot before you can actually Google something.

Another feature inlcuded in Firmware 4.00 is the ability to speed up or slow down the playback speed of videos stored on the unit's Memory Stick. All you need to do for this is to press up or down while playing the video.

Microsoft / Gaywood Ban Incident

The gamer blog Kotaku is reporting on a really weird story involving Microsoft and a decision that is, banned-manshall we say, hard to believe. Microsoft reportedly banned the Gamertag of a gentleman using his legal name, Richard Gaywood. Apparently, the man's actual name violates Microsoft policies on politically correct and clean Gamertags.

Microsoft's Xbox terms of use policy says a user cannot ...

"-Create a Gamertag or use text other profile fields that may offend other members. This includes comments that look, sound like, stand for, hint at, abbreviate, or insinuate any of the following: profane words/phrases, sexually explicit language, sexual innuendo, hate speech (including but not limited to racial, ethnic, or religious slurs), illegal drugs/controlled substances, or illegal activities."

The Kotaku blog contacted Microsoft to ask what, exactly, is wrong with RichardGaywood, especially since it includes a real surname. Microsoft's story is that someone saw it and complained about it. (Wow, who are these people that not only have time to game, they also have time to stop gaming and write a complaint to Microsoft over another's Gamertag? Those folks need to find a few more hobbies.) Microsoft had previously banned the Gamertag "TheGAYERGamer" because, Kotaku reports, Microsoft's Stephen Toulouse said "... it would be hard for me to defend to a parent of a young child who saw it that the name did not contain content of a sexual nature."

Should point out that while this story on Kotaku seems legit -- as it quotes Microsoft's policy and a Microsoft spokesperson -- it is an oddity. When it comes to homophobia, Seattle isn't Wyoming. But even so, do people -- even children -- really need Microsoft to protect them from a surname like Gaywood? Let's face it, the only ones who could see the so-called sexual reference in that word are not all that innocent.
